Pahalgam terror attack: 48 tourist sites shut in Kashmir amid security concerns

Nearly 50 public parks and gardens located in vulnerable areas of Kashmir valley have been shut as a precautionary measure in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, officials said on Tuesday. Gates have been closed at 48 of the 87 public parks and gardens in Kashmir in view of the threat perception to tourists, they said. They said the security review was an ongoing process and more locations may be added to the list in the coming days. The officials said the tourist locations which have been closed are in far-flung areas of Kashmir and include some of the new destinations thrown open over the past 10 years. The spots put off limit for the tourists include Dooshpathri, Kokernag, Duksum, Sinthan Top, Acchabal, Bangus valley, Margan Top and Tosamaidan. Although the authorities have not issued a formal order to this effect, the entry to these places has been blocked. In case of several Mughal Gardens in south Kashmir, the doors to these spots have been locked. The decision to shut down the tourist locations comes a week after terrorists shot dead 26 persons -- mostly tourists -- at Baisaran meadows in Pahalgam resort. Four travellers share their favourite veg-friendly destinations around the world

Many Indians like to travel in sizeable groups, whether it is multi-generational family trips, or with friends. With multiple people, a difference in preferences also comes into the picture, which may often not just be limited to activities one might want to indulge in during their vacation. The varying dietary preferences might become an obstacle for Indians who wish to travel internationally, as the local cuisine of several countries is meat and seafood heavy. While certain countries like Greece, and Italy offer enough traditional options for vegetarians, others like Japan and Spain might be extremely limited. Ask any vegetarian or vegan traveller, and they will tell you about their different degrees of struggle while travelling abroad. We got seasoned Indian travellers to share some of their favourite destinations which offer flavourful and inclusive culinary experiences for vegetarians as well as vegans. Indonesia If food is something you often worry about while traveling, Indonesia will put your mind at ease. A psychology student, and travel content creator, Reha Adani proclaims Indonesia to be a paradise for anyone looking to embrace a healthy lifestyle, good habits, and a positive mindset. She explains, “With its stunning natural beauty, yoga classes around every corner, and the rise of slow living, especially in Bali, veganism and vegetarianism have found a perfect home here.” Adani highlights that she came across an abundance of plant-based options in Bali alongside Indian staples. She shares, “You’ll find that almost every cafe has vegan options, and many are fully plant-based. This makes Bali a dream destination for health-conscious travellers. Indian tourists will be especially pleased to find familiar favourites like Kailash Parbat and Sukh Sagar alongside plenty of other vegetarian-friendly spots.” Fondly recalling her experience, the creator tells us that the ‘green vibe’ is not limited to the lush landscapes but is also deeply rooted in the food culture too. She adds, “Fresh, organic, and plant-based meals are easy to come by, whether you’re grabbing a quick smoothie bowl in Ubud or sitting down for a hearty meal of gado-gado or nasi campur made vegan. Even the most popular Kynd Cafe in Seminyak -- visited by everyone on their trip here, is vegan.” Even as many may have doubts, Adani gives vegetarians an assurance. She says, “If food is something you often worry about while traveling, Indonesia will put your mind at ease. Its vibrant vegan and vegetarian scene, along with its focus on wellness, makes it one of the most welcoming places for those who want to eat clean and feel good. Whether you’re a seasoned yogi or just someone looking for healthier options, Indonesia offers a rich and rewarding experience that nourishes both body and soul.” Chiang Mai in Thailand, and Cape Town in South Africa Monika Gulwani, a travel content creator and personal branding strategist, has been to many picturesque and delicious destinations on her year-long journey around the world. The nomad found Chiang Mai in Thailand to be an incredibly vegan-friendly destination. She recounts, “I really appreciate finding local cafes which offer sumptuous vegetarian fare. It's amazing to see how incredibly knit the community is in Chiang Mai and the variety of vegetarian and vegan options available. The café culture here is extremely diverse, you can get all sorts of food: from samosas to vegan pizzas, and of course pad Thai.” Gulwani’s travels took her to South Africa, where she was particularly impressed by Cape Town. “This country is so beautiful, you will be amazed by its purple sunsets, love for food, fashion and adventure. It's hard to get a food order wrong here, and the coffee cafes are just top notch,” she shares. What surprised and delighted her the most was the vegan African Swahili food. She adds, “I didn't expect much, but the Swahili food is really nice and can be largely vegetarian. I explored a lot of vegan African Swahili food in South Africa which overlaps with Indian cuisine. Also, there are lots of eateries where you can easily find vegetarian food, including safaris as well.” Vietnam and Sri LankaMusic curator Sagar Kari is an enthusiastic traveller who loves exploring nature, forests, and landscapes. Food is a crucial part of travel for the Mumbai resident. He animatedly shares, “When it comes to discovering new countries, the first thing I look for is the kind of food that country has. This helps me plan my trip so much better.” He believes his best travel memories always involve trying new cuisines and exploring unique cafes. Kari visited Hanoi, Da Nang, Hoi An, and Ninh Binh on a trip to Vietnam in 2022. The 31-year-old says, "One country that completely blew my mind was Vietnam. I was told that the country is a big meat hub, but as I reached there, that wasn’t the case. There are tons of restaurants serving vegetarian and even vegan dishes. There are street vendors that sell healthy vegetarian food. Pho, which is a classic Vietnamese dish, is so healthy was my favourite throughout.”   Exploring the quaint towns of Colombo, Kandy, Ella, and Nuwara Eliya, Kari found himself quite taken by the diverse culinary offerings of Sri Lanka on a recent trip. He recalls, “I loved the food in Sri Lanka. The southern flavours and spices they use for each and every dish were distinctly special. I ordered a thali (meal set) at one of the local restaurants, and they served me rice with four different types of curry, all of it vegetarian. I still think about that meal sometimes.” Southeast Asia and GeorgiaNiharika Jain, a Delhi-based content creator, describes herself as a passionate traveller who loves exploring diverse cultures, cuisines, and connecting with people from all over the globe. “From the generosity of Vietnamese hosts to the accommodating chefs across South East Asia, my journeys have been enriched by the wonderful food cultures I’ve encountered. Traveling as a vegetarian might require some planning, but it also opens doors to exciting culinary adventures.” Jain admits that finding vegetarian food while traveling internationally used to be a challenge but owing to the growing vegan culture and the presence of Indian restaurants, it has become easier to indulge in meals without compromising dietary preferences. She acknowledges the comfort of Indian cuisine abroad and balances it with her efforts to explore local cuisines, “Indian cuisine has been my comfort food during international trips, as the presence of Indian restaurants are now available almost everywhere. However, I always make an effort to try local dishes. I ensure they align with my vegetarian lifestyle by requesting chefs to skip meat-based oils or ingredients. For instance, during my trip to Thailand, I asked a chef to prepare a vegetarian Pad Thai with just vegetables and olive oil. A squeeze of lemon and a dash of extra spices later, it turned out to be one of the best noodles I’ve ever had.” Concluding with a favourite culinary memory, she talks about an endearing cafe in Tbilisi, Georgia. “Kiwi Vegan Cafe is known for its community-oriented vibe, and offers an extensive menu including tofu shawarma, vegan burgers, and hearty soups. I enjoyed a meal while soaking in the charming ambiance outdoors, surrounded by adorable stray cats, a common and heartwarming sight in Tbilisi.”

Summer 2025: Frequent travellers reveal top beach getaways for April and beyond

With temperatures starting to soar, it is time to head to the beach. April is kind of a sweet spot before the peak summer travel season kicks in and temperatures remain temperate, but it is not like you cannot visit the places beyond the month. In fact, you will be able to avoid the initial summer rush too. With increasing connectivity to neighbouring countries, and ease of travel within India, you can be overwhelmed by vacation planning easily. Fret not. Whether you have a flair for adventure, or you wish to relax with a drink by the sea, there is a beach destination that is ideal for you. So, where can you escape to? We asked seasoned travellers (and beachgoers) to share their favourite destinations to sink their feet in the sand. Picture turquoise waters, relaxing massages, indulgent food, and breathtaking views that will melt your stress away. These travel enthusiasts have hand-picked destinations and experiences that will help you plan your next beach getaway. Koh SamuiIf you are looking for beach getaways right out of a dream, you will be spoilt for choices in Koh Samui. Akanksha Prakash and Yash Dadlani are travel enthusiasts who run a food and travel blogging page on Instagram. Full-time professionals based out of Mumbai, the couple shares their love for a beach destination that is a sanctuary for them: Koh Samui. “We felt at peace,” recalls Prakash with a relaxed tone. She elaborates, “If you are looking for beach getaways right out of a dream, with soothing massage parlours, offbeat coffee spots, and postcard perfect sunsets, you will be spoilt for choices in Koh Samui.” Is April a good time to visit? Dadlani chimes in, “While the place is blessed with decent weather all year round, you may want to skip visiting during the rainy season (October to mid-December). We visited in March 2023 and were blown away!” Koh Samui Their advice is practical: rent a two-wheeler, stay near a beach, and explore. He also outlines the unmissable, “You can sip on the best iced Thai coffee at Tree Bridge Zipline, go for sunset horse riding, savour the best lunch and views at the Jungle Club, enjoy a relaxing Thai massage by the beach at Treehouse Silent beach, dine by the majestic fire show at Coco Tam's and party anywhere in the by lanes of Soi Green Mango. If you have more time on your hands, the Angthong Marine Park Boat Tour is a very unique experience, and in case you are willing to take a ferry for roughly two hours, you can snorkel at the Shark Bay in Koh Tao.” When pressed for crowded spots, Prakash reveals, “Ban Ti beach is a nice white sand beach. There's a little hidden beach area at Hinta Hinyai which is ideal for sunrise.” So, whether you seek azure waters or adventure, Koh Samui, is a destination that truly delivers. Kerala Kerala's beaches offer a variety of experiences. “April is an ideal month to visit beach destinations as the weather is warm but not overly hot, and the peak tourist crowds have significantly reduced. My go-to destination during this time is Goa,” says Parumita Pal, co-founder of Raw Diaries (a travel tech company) and creator in the travel space. Now, Goa's a classic, right? But the industry insider points out the hidden gems. “Goa offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. In April, you can enjoy warm days by chilling in a pool villa—affordable at this time—and as the evening sets in, you can explore Goa’s vibrant nightlife and beach parties. The community of Goa also offers unique experiences like Feni tasting, spice farm tours, refreshing dips in hidden waterfalls, and relaxing mud baths—activities that are accessible and budget-friendly in April,” she explains. For those seeking calmer shores, beyond the popular beaches of Goa, Pal proposes a visit to God’s own country: Kerala. “From Varkala to Alleppey to Kochi, Kerala's beaches offer a variety of experiences. You can start your day with an early morning surf session, then watch the world go by at a cafe or take a dip in the ocean in the evening,” shares Pal. She recommends a range of activities in the quaint town of Varkala which offers a blend of lively beach culture and spiritual serenity. “If you are a water baby, Varkala has many options including stand-up paddleboarding, and ocean kayaking. You can also choose to unwind with a host of meditation classes or traditional Ayurvedic spas. To experience the laidback charm and cliffside views, consider going for a leisurely stroll in the North Cliff area while soaking in the local buzz.” Pondicherry “Where else can you get a perfect dosa and a perfect pain au chocolat?”, asks marketer Ishita Gautam as she tells us animatedly about her trip to a former French colony. April’s temperate weather makes it the perfect time to explore Pondicherry. “Even though Pondicherry is not some hidden gem, I believe people underestimate the charm (and food) of this sleepy beach town. From the chill vibes of Serenity Beach to crystal clear waters of Paradise Beach, Pondicherry pleasantly surprised us. Two of my favourite memories are catching the sunrise at Rock Beach, and kayaking at Eden Beach,” confesses the 23-year-old. Eden Beach, Pondicherry Nestled on Coromandel Coast, Pondicherry offers a unique getaway beyond the typical beach experience. “Wandering through the White Town is like exploring a movie set. The cafes, the shops, the architecture and bougainvillea– everything was just so picturesque. We spent hours just wandering, taking photos, and trying all the amazing food. We had everything from seafood to the best crepes ever. Honestly, if you want a beach trip with a twist, Pondy’s your place. It’s like a little European escape, right here in India.” recalls the Bengaluru resident. A visit to Pondicherry is incomplete without a stop at Auroville, she shares, “Pondicherry is deeply connected to the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and Mirra Alfassa, known as ‘The Mother.’ From the Auro Experience Store, showcasing their practical philosophies in 'Yoga in Everyday Life,' to the serene Matrimandir, Auroville invites everyone to experience a different way of life. It’s this whole other world, so peaceful and unique.”

Prayagraj, Varanasi among top destinations for spiritual tourism in 2025: Report

After Maha Kumbh Mela, the rise of spiritual tourism in India is seeing many tourists get ready for the Chardham and Amarnath Yatras in the coming days. It is no wonder then that digital travel platform Agoda’s latest accommodation search trends highlight a continued rise in spiritual tourism across India. In the first three months of 2025, both domestic and inbound travellers have shown a growing interest in destinations rooted in cultural and spiritual significance. Among many cities in India, Prayagraj (formerly known as Allahabad) has emerged as a prominent success story among both domestic and inbound travellers. While the city did not feature in the online travel top 50 accommodation search rank in early 2024, it has cropped up now. However, this year, it has climbed to number 11 for domestic searches and number 15 among inbound travellers in January, February, and March. This rise aligns with the return of the Mahakumbh Mela after 12 years.  During this period, the report shares that the platform also recorded a 233 per cent year-on-year increase in domestic accommodation searches for Allahabad. Other domestic destinations that experienced a rise in rankings include Ayodhya (number 25, up by 11 spots), Rishikesh (number 19, up by nine spots), Manali (number 21, up by nine spots), and Vrindavan (number 24, up by eight spots).  Among inbound travellers, Varanasi (number 6, up by nine spots), Amritsar (number 14, up by eight spots), Agra (number 12, up by seven spots), and Coimbatore (number 22, up by seven spots) saw a noticeable uptick. Talking about this rising trend, Gaurav Malik, country director of India subcontinent at the digital travel platform, said, "This interest in India's spiritual destinations indicates a growing trend in how people travel, with more travellers looking for cultural connection and personal meaning."

Pahalgam terror attack: Tourists leave Kashmir, cancel travel plans

A gruesome terror attack in Pahalgam, located in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, on Tuesday, April 22, has affected the valley’s tourism sector, prompting existing visitors to leave and others to reconsider their future visits. The attack, which killed at least 26 people, mostly tourists, and injured several others, took place at Baisaran, a meadow accessible only by foot or horses. The incident comes in the midst of Kashmir’s spring tourism season, which attracts travellers from around the world. However, following the attack, tourists in the area have begun leaving, with authorities making efforts for the safe return of the visitors to their respective home states. Tourism in Kashmir affected Tour operators and other people associated with the tourism sector said that most of the tourists were leaving the valley due to fear, PTI reported. "We know tourists have by and large been safe in Kashmir but with such an incident happening here, one cannot expect them to stay back. The cancellations are massive, close to 80 per cent," Aijaz Ali, a travel operator from Srinagar, told PTI, adding that people were also cancelling packages for the next month. "All the good work over the past several years has gone down the drain. It will take a lot of convincing to bring tourists again to Kashmir," Ali added. While most tourists are scared and leaving the area, some are staying back. "We have come out (of hotel rooms) and we do not feel any fear. There is security everywhere. We have plans to visit Pahalgam and if the situation remains good, then we may go there tomorrow," a woman tourist from Maharashtra told PTI. "We have come from Mumbai, we thought now we have to return, but the hotel staff made us feel safe and comfortable. They told us we can move around. We came out and saw that here is police and army everywhere and tourists are feeling secure. We can safely move around and the fear is decreasing now," she added. Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat asserted that his ministry will do their best to "minimise the dent" on tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. "I am in touch with everybody, my office too, my secretary is also in touch with the tourism secretary in Jammu and Kashmir, the chief secretary of Jammu and Kashmir. We are in continuous touch and keeping an eye on that. And, we will do our best to minimise the dent on tourism in Kashmir, because of this incident, and tourism across the country," he told reporters, according to PTI. Measures for safe return of tourists While Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said it was "heartbreaking" to see the exodus of visitors, he revealed measures taken to facilitate their safe return. "It's heartbreaking to see the exodus of our guests from the valley after yesterday's tragic terror attack in Pahalgam but at the same time we totally understand why people would want to leave. While DGCA & the Ministry of Civil Aviation are working to organise extra flights, NH-44 between Srinagar & Jammu has been reconnected for traffic in a single direction," Abdullah posted on X. "I've directed the administration to facilitate traffic between Srinagar and Jammu allowing tourist vehicles to leave. This will have to be done in a controlled and organised way because the road is still unstable in places and we are also working hard to clear all the stranded vehicles. We will not be able to permit completely free movement of vehicles at the moment and we hope that everyone will cooperate with us," he added. Pahalgam terror attack: Shutdown to addt'l flights, what tourists need to know

In the wake of a terrorist attack in Kashmir’s Pahalgam, tourists have been forced to be on guard since April 22. With uncertainty hanging in the air, there are a lot of changes since yesterday that they need to know about that not only include a shutdown but also flight departures. The situated escalated after a tragic incident where at least 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed and several others were injured in a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s popular tourist hub Pahalgam, and has shaken the valley since then. The attack took place at Baisaran, a meadow accessible only by foot or horses, where a group of tourists had gone visiting the same morning. With so many fans eager to experience the thrilling atmosphere of a live match, it’s not just about being there, it's about making the most of every moment.  Taran Singh, a popular sports influencer and cricket enthusiast, known for his much-awaited match-day content and expert insights, shares more on how to elevate your stadium experience and travel smart this IPL season. He says, “Cricket in India isn’t just a game anymore, it’s become a full-blown travel experience. Whether it’s following your favourite team from city to city during the IPL or planning a match weekend with friends and family, fans today are building their itineraries around cricket calendars. I have personally done this and the energy at the stadium is unmatched. For someone like me who is often hopping between cities to catch the action, planning smart is key.” Taran Singh also shared his top tips to help cricket fans make the most of their match day experience:1. Pick the right seats: Go for upper-tier seats behind the bowler’s arm for a better view and a bit more ventilation. It makes a difference, especially during those long innings.2. Arrive early: Stadium gates usually open 2–3 hours before the match. Get in early to skip long queues, settle in. 3. Protect your ticket like gold: Your physical ticket is your only entry pass. If the barcode is torn, faded or tampered with, you will be turned away—no matter what. Handle with care.4. Cut the clutter: Most stadiums don’t allow backpacks or large handbags. If you must carry something, keep it to a small sling bag or use your pockets for essentials.5. Dress for comfort, not just style: Light cotton clothes work best in the heat. Don’t forget your cap, sunscreen and sunglasses. And wear comfortable shoes as you will be walking a lot.6. Stick to the stadium rules: Security checks are tight. Power banks, food, metal objects, water bottles, helmets are not allowed in. Check the prohibited list beforehand.
